Stars to Shine for Last Time in Ventura County Game

Fifty-two of Ventura County’s top senior baseball players will converge on Oxnard College today for the East-West All-Star game, making winning a vastly secondary consideration for coaches.

Getting everybody playing time is the No. 1 challenge.

“It’s a good thing it’s a nine-inning game or it would be a nightmare,” said Coach Scott Fullerton of Moorpark High, who along with Tony Walzcuk of Malibu is coaching the East team.

The East has a roster of 28 players from 11 teams, including five from Westlake, which played Saturday in the Southern Section Division III final at Dodger Stadium.

The West, coached by Rich Duran of Rio Mesa and Dan Garcia of Oxnard, has a roster of 24 players from 10 teams.

“The only final score that matters is is whether all the kids are able to participate,” Duran said. “From the coaches’ standpoint, there isn’t a rivalry between the East and West, but the players will want to put their A game on display, that’s for sure.”
