One man was shot to death and another was injured early Thursday in what police say was the end of a relationship involving a 13-year-old girl.

Juan Ordones, 20, died at the scene and Carlos Paredes, 45, was hospitalized in guarded condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center after the 12:10 a.m. shooting in the 700 block of South Mariposa Avenue, said Sgt. Willie Guerrero of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The girl, Ordones and Paredes were sitting in the lobby of their apartment building when her ex-boyfriend, Jose Jurado, 23, and a 17-year-old male companion arrived, Guerrero said.

The 17-year-old fired five rounds at Ordones with a semiautomatic handgun, striking him once in the side and wounding Paredes, he said.

The suspect was arrested during a police search of the area, but Jurado is still being sought, Guerrero said.

“The motive of the crime appeared to be jealousy,” said Guerrero, who added that the girl had broken up with Jurado and was seeing Ordones before the incident occurred.
