Smith Bowled Over, Finishes 4th in Lucrative PBA Event

Robert Smith, a graduate of Royal High, finished fourth in the $330,000 AC-Delco Classic on Saturday at Cal Bowl in Lakewood.

Smith, a 24-year-old rookie on the Professional Bowlers Assn. tour, earned $12,000.

Smith went into the windup of the four-day event in third place, but he lost a three-way match against eventual tournament runner-up Tim Criss of Bel Air, Md., and third-place finisher Ricky Ward of North Ft. Myers, Fla.

The three competed in a one-game shootout for the right to play leader Steve Hoskins of Tarpon Springs, Fla., in the championship match.

Criss advanced to the title match with a score of 230 in the shootout. Ward scored 202 and Smith had 196.

Smith, runner-up in the AC-Delco tournament as an amateur bowling against pros in 1994 when he lost the title match to Norm Duke, led the shootout through three frames. But he had three open frames after that, including two as a result of difficult splits he was unable to covert.

Smith finished with a total of 10,105 pins in 43 tournament games. He had a high game of 279.

Hoskins won the final match and the title against Criss, 230-202, to claim the winner’s purse of $52,000, the second-largest total on the PBA tour. Criss won $26,000 and Ward $17,000.

FOOTBALL

Former Kennedy High running back Ontiwaun Carter was released by the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday, 10 days before the team’s 1998 Canadian Football League opener.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Margaret Mohr, who played at Le Reina High, has been hired as women’s coach at Cypress College.

Mohr, 1983 Ventura County high school player of the year, coached the last four seasons at Long Beach Wilson High, and this year led the school to its first appearance in a Southern Section final.

AUTO RACING

Cory Kruseman of Ventura finished eighth in the 13th annual Quaker State Classic, a 30-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. main event Friday night at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz.

Ed Patterson III of Oak View finished 10th.

Kruseman is fifth in the SCRA series points standings with 803 points. Leader Richard Griffin has 1,032 points.

Cal State Northridge softball Coach Janet Sherman will head a 1998 Summer Softball Training Camp for girls of all ages scheduled for July 13-16 at Northridge.

The camp will run from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each day, with lunch provided. General cost is $175; for members of the Cal State Northridge Junior Club, the

Registration is being taken for a girls’ basketball camp instructed by Moorpark High girls’ Coach Brent Milburn.

The camp is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from July 6-8 at Moorpark High. It will be directed by Milburn and his staff, along with former and current Musketeer players.

Camp cost is $80. All proceeds will go to the Moorpark High girls’ basketball program.

Entries are being taken for the Cool Breeze Bicycle Ride, which is scheduled for Aug. 22 in Ventura.

As many as 500 cyclists are expected to participate in rides of various distances, including a metric century ride of approximately 65 miles, a 100-mile century ride and a double-metric ride of 130 miles along the Ventura and Santa Barbara-area coastlines and through Casitas Pass.

The entry fee is $22 through July 31, $27 after that.

A variety of sports-related camps are being offered by the city of Calabasas. All camps will take place at De Anza Park, at 3701 Lost Hills Road in Calabasas.

Two sessions of a basketball fundamentals mini-camp for youngsters 5-12 are scheduled from 9 a.m.-noon July 13-15 and from Aug. 17-19. Cost is $58.

A mini-roller hockey camp for youngsters 13 and under is scheduled from 9 a.m.-noon on July 20-22, Aug. 10-12, and Aug. 24-26. Cost is $75 per session.

The Blade Right Inline Skating Camp for youngsters of all ages will be run from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in two sessions, from July 6-10 and from Aug. 17-21.

Cost is $12 per day, or $50 per five-day session.
