CHP Finishes Report on Roberts’ Death

A California Highway Patrol investigation has concluded a passenger’s actions caused the driver to lose control of his vehicle, leading to an accident Monday that caused the death of Emily Roberts, a former Hart High girls’ basketball player.

The report, released Friday, concluded passenger Jason Semelsberger fell into driver Amir Parvinchiha before the car overturned on Highway 20 in Clearlake, about 60 miles northest of Sacramento.

Roberts, 20, was ejected from the car and died at the scene.

The CHP report will be forwarded to the Lake County District Attorney’s office to determine if there is sufficient evidence to charge Semelsberger, a former Hart golfer who plays at UCLA, with involuntary manslaughter.

CHP investigators found “the lack of seat belt usage played a large part in the cause and unfortunate result of this tragic occurrence.”

Parvinchiha, 20, a basketball player for Hart in 1996, was the only one of the four occupants of the car wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

Parvinchiha and Mary Cunnan, 20, a former Hart girls’ basketball player, suffered minor injuries in the accident. Semelsberger, 20, was reported to have moderate injuries. All three were treated at a hospital and released.

The four former classmates were returning to the Santa Clarita Valley after attending the wedding of a friend.

BASEBALL

Joe Gordon, a former All-Southern Section player at Simi Valley High, has been hired as the school’s baseball coach and a math teacher. He replaces Tom D’Errico, who resigned two weeks ago after three seasons as coach.

Gordon, a 1990 Simi Valley graduate, tied a school record with 15 home runs as a senior.

A former minor-league baseball player, Gordon, 25, served as a Simi Valley assistant coach the last two seasons.

Former Camarillo High outfielder Joe Borchard of Stanford has been selected by Baseball America magazine as a freshman All-American.

Seven five-day sessions of the Cal Lu Dawgs’ baseball camp are scheduled for the summer at Cal Lutheran.

Camps directed by Cal Lutheran Coach Marty Slimak and his staff will begin Monday and run through the week of Aug. 17-21. A three-day baseball specialty camp is being offered July 6-8.

The second annual Valley East-West all-star game is scheduled for July 17 at 6:30 p.m. at Birmingham High.

SOCCER

The Valley United Stars 14-and-under girls’ team advanced to the final of the Far West regional in Albuquerque with a 4-0 victory over the Arizona Golden Eagles on Friday.

The Stars will play the Colorado Rush today for the championship.

Crystal James, Diana Sanguinetti, Ali Pavoni and Tara Donahue each scored for the Stars.

Frank Parodi, fired in November as coach of the Moorpark College men’s team, said he has been hired as an assistant with the Glendale College men’s team.

Parodi coached Moorpark from 1989-97 and had a 14-year junior college record of 115-77-33.

WRESTLING

Olivia Ocampo, who graduated Friday from Channel Islands High, won the 101-pound division title at the FILA Junior women’s national championships last weekend in Metairie, La.

Ocampo, who won the 104-pound high school girls’ national title in March, won four matches in 20-and-under competition to qualify for the Junior world championships in Norway in August.

MISCELLANY

Mark Steele, president of a group trying to build support for a $90 million sports complex at Cal State Northridge’s North Campus, will hold a community meeting on the project Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the University Performing Arts Center.
