The Huntington Beach Police Department on Saturday night set up the first of what will be a series of checkpoints on Main Street this summer aimed at preventing unruly behavior.

Police officers were on the lookout for juveniles violating the city’s 10 p.m. curfew as well as drunk drivers and people violating any of a variety of city drinking ordinances. It was unclear how many people were cited or arrested. About 15 extra officers were called in for the effort.

The Police Department typically sets up a major checkpoint on Main Street at the beginning of the summer.

In the past, Main Street has been the site of unchecked revelry in the summer, particularly around and on the Fourth of July. In recent years, however, city officials have tried to crack down on unruly behavior, causing clashes between police and some young people.
