CS Fullerton Survives Gaucho Outburst

UC Santa Barbara’s Brad Wright hit two home runs, but it was not enough as Cal State Fullerton held on to win, 9-8, in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday at Titan Field.

The Titans (13-6, 2-0) scored in each of the first four innings to take a 9-5 lead. After UC Santa Barbara got as close as 9-8, reliever Adam Johnson came on and shut down the Gauchos (5-9-2, 0-2) the final three innings. Johnson gave up one hit and had six strikeouts.

Ryan Owens hit a three-run homer for the Titans and has a hit in seven of the last eight games.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Concordia 9-9, Point Loma Nazarene 3-4--Concordia’s Ben Kindreich had two hits and scored three runs in the first game of a doubleheader. Derek Patterson and Matt Broesamie each had two RBIs in the game for Concordia (6-9 overall).

Broesamie had three hits in the second game and pitched a complete game for his fourth victory of the season.

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 12-13, Moravian (Pa.) 0-0--Jeff Blitstein pitched a four-hit shutout in the first game of doubleheader for Chapman (10-5). Blitstein extended his scoreless innings streak to a school record 21 innings.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 8-2, New Mexico State 0-1--Cal Sate Fullerton’s Brenda Iglesias belted a two-out homer in the bottom of the sixth inning as the host Titans (8-8, 2-2) clobbered the Roadrunners in the first game of a doubleheader. Iglesias was two for three with two RBIs and Christa Saindon drove in three runs with a triple in the fifth inning.

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 8-12, Siena Heights (Mich.) 0-0--Jen Houston pitched two one-hitters and had 16 strikeouts for SCC. Houston is 10-1 this season.

At the Southern California Intercollegiate Golf Championship:

UC Irvine finishes fourth--UC Irvine’s Andrew Wen shot a 75 in the second round to finish second in the tournament with 153 for two rounds at Torrey Pines South Course (par 72). Jeff Hauer of UC Davis won the university division with 151.

Hauer won the university division with 151. UC Irvine was fourth (633). UC Davis won with 622. Chapman finished fifth (671).
