SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The three-point parade ran out for Calvary Chapel Tuesday night as La Jolla The Bishop’s defeated the Eagles, 63-58, Tuesday night in the first round of the Division IV boys’ basketball regionals here.

Although seventh-seeded Calvary Chapel made nine three-pointers, the Eagles attempted 37, and until late in the game, were unable to get the ball in the post.

“We aren’t very balanced,” Calvary Chapel Coach Craig Falconer said. “Since we have five guards, we are winning and dying by the outside shot. It’s probably my fault. We just don’t have an inside game.”

Eagle guard Joe Ortiz, averaging more than 30 points in the playoffs, was limited to eight points. He was two of 14 from the field and was two of six from three-point range.

Junior Brett Young scored 27 points, including four three-pointers.

The Eagles, who trailed at the end of the third quarter, 49-38, fell behind by as much as 16 in the quarter. But they rallied to get as close as five with 1 minute 37 seconds left in the game. However the Eagles missed three from long range in the final minute.

Although Calvary Chapel (23-8) was hampered by poor shooting, hitting nine of 36 from the field, and three of 19 from the three-point line, the Eagles trailed by only five at halftime. Ortiz was one for nine from the field in the first half.

The Knights (23-7) dominated the inside game. They were led by Mike Hausmann, a 6-7 forward and an All-San Diego Section water polo player, and Nik Booker, a 6-5 forward. Hausmann finished with 21 points and nine rebounds. Booker had 19 points and 13 rebounds.
