An off-duty police officer was shot in the chin late Tuesday night, apparently while chasing suspects allegedly involved in a fatal drive-by shooting, authorities said.

The officer, who was not identified, was taken to Providence-Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills and was in stable condition late Tuesday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The San Fernando police officer was responding to a drive-by shooting at 4th and North Huntington streets in San Fernando at about 10 p.m., according to officers at the scene who did not want to be identified.

The body of an unidentified male lay in the street in the 400 block of North Huntington.

The officer was shot near the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Astoria Street in Sylmar while pursuing the suspects in his car, the officers said.

About 40 minutes after the shootings, two suspects were arrested near the intersection where the officer was shot. More than two dozen officers from the San Fernando and Los Angeles police departments combed the area with dogs and patrol vehicles, searching for other suspects.
