Arizona Beats Texas to Win Softball Title
Nancy Evans pitched a seven-hitter with seven strikeouts as top-ranked Arizona beat Texas, 2-1, in the championship game of the Kia Klassic softball tournament Sunday in front of 2,134 at Cal State Fullerton.
Arizona scored twice in the second inning and Texas got its only run in the sixth on a one-out home run by Jodi Reeves. It was her fifth.
The Longhorns then got singles from Nikki Cockrell and Angie Scharnhorst between an out, but Evans got Christa Williams to strike out looking to end the inning.
Evans also scored Arizona’s first run in the second when she doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
Lindsey Collins singled, went to second on a forceout, reached third on a single by Lauren Bauer and scored on a double by Alison Johnsen for Arizona’s second run.
In the Sun West softball tournament:
Chapman wins twice--Catie Lacy (7-0) pitched a four-hitter as the Panthers beat Eastern Oregon, 3-0, at El Camino Park in Orange.
Chapman (20-2) had beaten Pacific Lutheran, 10-0, in five innings earlier Sunday.
