SCC Tumbles in Baseball Sectional Final

Azusa Pacific defeated Southern California College, 14-8, to win the NAIA Far West baseball sectional title Saturday afternoon at Azusa Pacific.

Fritz Maskre pitched six innings and gave up four hits and four unearned runs. He struck out eight to get the victory for the Cougars (34-9).

SCC’s Bobby Sanchez was four for four.

Azusa Pacific advances to the NAIA Far West regionals; the Vanguards finish the season 24-23.

In Big West conference softball:

CS Fullerton 5-5, UC Santa Barbara 4-4--Dara Marzolo hit a lead-off homer in the eighth for host Cal State Fullerton (29-28, 13-15) in the first game.

In the second game, Nikki Hart doubled in three runs with two outs in the fourth to put the Titans ahead, 4-3. Kristy Osborne doubled to score Hart.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Point Loma Nazarene 1-5, SCC 0-9--Gretchen Brandt got her 20th victory of the season and SCC (43-10, 11-4) scored five runs in the ninth to win the second game.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 7-9, UC San Diego 2-0--Dawn Lopez was three for four and scored three times for Chapman (31-6) in the first game of a doubleheader.

Stephanie Carew hit her 11th homer of the season for Chapman.

Chapman had a seven-run second inning in the second game.

At the Steve Scott Track Invitational:

Current and past Anteaters fare well--Steve Scott, three-time Olympian, won the 1,500 meters in 3 minutes 49.82 seconds. UCI junior Shahram DeZahd won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:33.70.

In the women’s 400-meter hurdles, former Anteater Skye Green won in 58.40. UCI senior Christie Engesser finished third in the 800 meters in 2:07.96, the third fastest time in Anteater history.
