Science Bowl Team Falls Short in Championship

A bid by the North Hollywood High School Science Bowl team to win the school’s first national championship fell short Monday when the five-member squad lost in the championship round.
But the team members, who all described the competition as intense, said the runner-up finish was a great accomplishment, given that 1,600 high schools vied to get to the national tournament in Washington.
North Hollywood entered Monday’s competition as one of only four teams--out of 12 finalists--without a loss in the double-elimination tournament that began Sunday night.
During the final-round action, North Hollywood scored two quick victories, including one over Arcadia High School, the only other Southern California school in the competition. Ultimately, the North Hollywood team lost to Valley High School of Des Moines, Iowa, 172-112.
