Golf Titles On Line in Many Leagues

League titles, playoff berths and spots in the Southern Section and City Section individual championships are all up for grabs this week for many of the region’s high school golf teams.

Several league champions have been decided: nobody in the Marmonte League expects to catch Westlake and Foothill League teams have all but conceded the league title to Hart.

San Marcos is a heavy favorite in the Channel League and L.A. Baptist has the inside track on the Tri-Valley League.

But in some leagues, the Mission, Frontier and City 5 in particular, competition for that coveted title is fierce.

Since 1989, Notre Dame, Alemany and Loyola have won three Mission League titles each. This year, Notre Dame and Alemany are battling for the top spot.

Led by Tommy Barber and Kevin Coghlin, the Knights hold a slim one-point edge over the Brian Woolf and Krystal Shearer-led Indians entering today’s team finals.

Teams are given one point for each league victory during the regular season, but in today’s tournament at Wilson Golf Course in Griffith Park, the winner gets four points, second place gets three, third place two and fourth place gets a point.

In the Frontier League, Calabasas’ streak of six consecutive league championships is in jeopardy. Calabasas trails Nordhoff by two strokes entering today’s final round at Elkins Ranch.

Calabasas, led by brothers Jon and Justin Ohye, figure to have the edge, considering they would have a nine-stroke lead if Aaron Levine hadn’t been disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard after the second round.

But Nordhoff, with Jeff Coburn, Shawn Andrews and Tommy Hadjuk leading the way, has as tough a top five as any team around.

In the City 5 League tournament today at Buenaventura Golf Course, Marco Evans and Patrick Stewart hope to help defending City Section champion Chatsworth fend off challenges from Darrin Schneider, Julie Park and the rest of the Granada Hills team as well as from Palisades, a one-time City Section power that is competing in a league for the first time since 1994.

Russell Surber of Flintridge Prep, who has finished third in the CIF/SCGA tournament in each of the last two years and has won the Prep League each of the last two years, is in danger of not earning one of two spots allotted to Prep League players in the Southern Section tournament. He enters Thursday’s final round in third place, two strokes off the lead.

Brian Woolf of Alemany tries to defend his Mission League title today and Friday during the league tournament at Wilson and Harding golf courses.

Charlie Smith holds a six-stroke edge over Hart teammate Ryan Wyman with two rounds to go in the Foothill League tournament and defending champion J.T. Kohut of Westlake leads by six strokes entering the final round of the Marmonte League tournament.
