Chaminade Finishes Strong Run

The Chaminade High baseball team capped a remarkable season-ending run with a 6-2 Mission League victory over St. Francis on Friday at Chaminade.

The Eagles (14-13-1, 5-6-1 in league play) won five consecutive games to end the season and qualify for an at-large berth in the Southern Section playoffs. A record of .500 or better is required for a playoff berth.

Spencer Gordon hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and Jim Milkovich had two hits, including a two-run double in the fifth. Brian Kirby (4-4) pitched a seven-hitter.

Fernando Valenzuela hit home runs in the fourth and sixth innings for the Knights.

In other games:

Poly 6, North Hollywood 5--George Felix scored the winning run for the Parrots (14-6-2, 9-4-2) with one out in the seventh inning on a squeeze bunt by Angel Espindola in an East Valley League game at Poly.

El Camino Real 12, Taft 2--Kurt Birkins drove in three runs and struck out three in six innings in a West Valley League game at Taft.

Birkins (9-1), a senior left-hander, allowed four hits. Woody Cliffords had three hits and drove in a run for El Camino Real (15-8, 12-3).

Van Nuys 6, Reseda 5--Jose Avila’s bunt single with two out in the bottom of the seventh drove in Angel Barajas with the winning run in a Mid-Valley League game at Van Nuys.

Monroe 7, Canoga Park 1--John Ennis drove in two runs with singles for Monroe (15-13-1, 9-7) in a Mid-Valley League game at Monroe.

Vince Vargas had two hits for Monroe. Victor Banuelos (5-7) struck out three and allowed three hits.

Westlake 11, Royal 8--The Warriors scored eight runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 4-3 deficit and clinch the Marmonte League’s second playoff berth at Westlake.

Ryan Cope had two hits and drove in two runs for Westlake (15-10, 9-5).

Brian Lipman had a grand slam in the seventh for Royal (17-7, 10-4).

Agoura 12, Newbury Park 11--Nick Hillman’s sixth-inning run-scoring single capped a five-run rally for Agoura (15-10-1) in a Marmonte League game at Agoura. Ryan Ayers had a grand slam in a seven-run fifth for Newbury Park (10-14, 3-11).

Antelope Valley 6, Lancaster 0--Mike Seward, Justin Morgan and Brett Roth combined on a five-hitter for the Antelopes (11-14, 8-7) in a Golden League game at Antelope Valley.

Highland 3-10, Palmdale 2-11--Jason Kubel drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the eighth to drive in Traviss Hodge with the winning run in the first game, ending Palmdale’s 14-game Golden League winning streak at Highland.

Burroughs 3, Saugus 1--Nick Jastrow threw a two-hitter and struck out six for Burroughs (14-12, 9-6) in a Foothill League game at Burroughs.

John Moreno has two hits and an RBI for Burroughs.

Hueneme 5, Santa Barbara 2--Chris Neri (5-2) pitched a five hitter, striking out 11, and the Vikings (16-10, 8-6) clinched third place in the Channel League at Hueneme.

Calabasas 3, Santa Paula 2--Tom Lookabill had a two-out bases loaded single to drive in Marc Wilson in the bottom of the seventh in a Frontier League game at Calabasas.

Randy Curtis had three hits for the Coyotes (12-12, 10-5).

Rio Mesa 5, Oxnard 4--Ernie Borjas’ single with two outs in the top of the sixth inning scored Richard Martinez to break a 4-4 tie for Rio Mesa (21-7, 12-2) in a Channel League game at Oxnard.

Paul McAnulty had three hits and two runs batted in for Oxnard (9-12-1, 3-10-1).

L.A. Baptist 12, Maranatha 6--Rick Wendt had two hits, including a three-run home run, and four RBIs to help L.A. Baptist (17-5, 9-0) clinch its fifth Alpha League championship in six years at L.A. Baptist.
