A tow truck driver helping a stranded motorist was killed early Sunday in a hit-and-run accident on the Ronald Reagan Freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred at 3:05 a.m. in Chatsworth, near the eastbound exit for Topanga Canyon Boulevard, said CHP Officer Bob Granieri.

Som Gaur, 30, of Granada Hills, was pronounced dead at the scene. Gaur, a tow truck driver who worked for the Auto Club of Southern California, was hit along the freeway shoulder as he fixed a flat tire for a stranded driver, Granieri said.

Gaur immigrated with his family to the United States in 1976 from the Punjab province in India.

“The whole family is in big shock,” said Shav Gaur, Som’s uncle. “We are confused because this was so sudden. We cannot absorb this whole thing.”

Authorities could not provide a description of the hit-and-run suspect or the suspect’s vehicle. The accident was almost directly across the freeway from the spot where a 34-year-old woman was killed Saturday when her car plunged 300 feet down an embankment.
