La Mirada’s Streak Faces a Serious Test

La Mirada’s football team puts its 29-game Suburban League win streak on the line Friday when the six-time defending champion Matadores play host to Lakewood Mayfair.

La Mirada is 8-0 overall, 4-0 in league play and ranked No. 1 in Division IX.

Mayfair (6-2, 4-0) is ranked fourth.

The La Mirada-Mayfair matchup is one of several games that have league championship implications with two games remaining in the regular season.

In the Division II Sierra League, Rowland (5-3, 3-0) plays Diamond Bar (7-1, 3-0) tonight at Walnut.

Norco (5-3, 3-0) travels to Jurupa Valley (8-0, 5-0) for a Division V Mountain View League showdown on Friday.

In the Division IX Valle Vista League, Bonita (7-1, 4-1) plays host to San Dimas (7-1, 4-1).

West Torrance (6-1-1, 4-0-1) plays at Torrance (4-3-1, 4-0-1) in the Division X Ocean League.

In the Division XII High Desert League, Rosamond (5-3, 3-0) plays at Mojave (5-3, 3-0).

Boron (8-0, 2-0) is at Lone Pine (8-0, 2-0) in a Division XIII Desert Mountain League matchup.

Quarterback Chris Lewis of Long Beach Poly High needs to pass for two touchdowns Friday against Lakewood to eclipse the state career record of 92 set by Ron Cuccia of Los Angeles Wilson in 1979.

Lewis passed for four touchdowns in the first half of last week’s 62-0 Moore League victory over Compton.

Long Beach Poly, the defending Division I champion, has won 22 consecutive games.

Playoff pairings for boys’ water polo, girls’ volleyball and girls’ tennis will be announced Monday with wild-card play beginning Tuesday.

The Southern Section cross-country prelims will be run Nov. 14. The championship meet is Nov. 21 at Mt. Antonio College.
