A look at the Southern Section divisions in which Orange County’s large-school football teams compete (rankings are from Southern Section divisional polls):

DIVISION I

No. 4 Mater Dei will meet Trabuco Hills, unranked but suddenly unbeaten, Friday for the South Coast League championship. Trabuco Hills had the one loss on its record wiped out when Laguna Hills last week forfeited all of its victories. . . .

Some of the luster is off of this week’s Del Rey League meeting between No. 3 La Puente Bishop Amat and No. 5 Los Angeles Loyola, after Loyola’s 17-14 loss Friday to No. 9 Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. It was the Cubs’ first loss. . . . Also falling for the first time was Rialto Eisenhower, which lost to No. 10 Fontana A.B. Miller, 35-28. The loss dropped Eisenhower into a three-way tie for the Citrus Belt lead with Miller and Fontana. . . . Which Long Beach Wilson will turn up for its showdown with No. 1 Long Beach Poly this week for the Moore League championship? The one that averaged 56 points in its six victories or the one that averaged 14 points in its three losses? Either way, the Bruins will have their hands full with a Poly team that has won its four league games by an average score of 62-5. . . .

Huntington Beach will have a chance to receive an at-large playoff bid, if it can win at Edison on Friday and finish 7-3. The Oilers’ chief competition for the berth is Redlands, which would finish 6-4 with a loss to Eisenhower. A Redlands victory, however, would make Eisenhower the likely at-large team.

DIVISION VI

Westminster’s upset of No. 4 Servite jumbled the Golden West League playoff picture and left possible a scenario never before seen in Orange County. Should Saddleback, Santa Ana and Westminster win this week, the league would have five co-champions, with only Ocean View left out of the mix. . . .

The Pacific Coast League was also turned upside down, but by an off-the-field occurrence. No. 6 Laguna Hills’ forfeiting of five games gave new life to Costa Mesa and University, which now find themselves tied for first place with Aliso Niguel. But Laguna Beach, which early this season won a league game on the field for the first time in four years, could qualify for the playoffs if it can defeat University on Friday. . . . The Sea View League’s representatives for the playoffs have been determined, but the league still has the week’s most attractive pairing. Unbeaten Woodbridge, ranked No. 2, meets No. 1 Santa Margarita, coming off a 42-18 upset loss to No. 3 Irvine. . . .

The Sea View League will likely get the at-large berth, with No. 8 Corona del Mar and No. 9 Newport Harbor in the running. Newport Harbor could finish 7-3 if it can defeat Irvine Friday. But the Sailors lost to Corona del Mar, which would finish at 6-4 with a victory over El Toro.

DIVISION IX

The odd teams out each week in the seven-team Suburban and Garden Grove leagues have played each other this season, with the Garden Grove League posting a 5-1 record in the series. But that may not prove to be a harbinger of playoff success. The one Suburban League victory was a 45-21 decision by its champion, No. 1 La Mirada, over Garden Grove League titlist Pacifica, ranked No. 3. . . .

La Mirada wrapped up a share of the Suburban championship Friday with a 21-18 victory over No. 4 Lakewood Mayfair, behind Mike Lemon’s 319 yards rushing and three touchdowns in 40 carries. . . .

No. 5 La Verne Bonita clinched a tie for the Valle Vista League title by defeating No. 7 San Dimas, 27-0. San Dimas, which won its first seven games, lost for the second week in a row to drop into a tie for second with Baldwin Park and No. 8 Covina Northview. Whichever of those three teams loses out on an automatic playoff bid will be a top contender for the division’s at-large berth. But two county schools are in the running. If Santiago is unable to upset Pacifica, the Cavaliers will finish fourth in the Garden Grove League with a 7-3 record. Savanna would place fourth in the Orange League at 7-3 if it can’t upset No. 2 Brea Olinda.
