Quick Start Ignites Notre Dame, 38-22
So much for the theory that the Notre Dame High football team would suffer a letdown after moving up to No. 1 in The Times’ regional rankings.
The Knights opened up a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and coasted to a 38-22 victory over St. John Bosco in their Del Rey League finale Friday at Notre Dame.
Notre Dame (9-1, 2-1) finished second in the Del Rey behind Bishop Amat, which tied Loyola on Friday.
Linebacker Aaron Wiener got the Knights off to a good start, recovering a fumble and intercepting a pass in the first quarter to set up their first two touchdowns.
After Wiener recovered a fumble at the St. John Bosco 27-yard line, running back Chris Leon gave Notre Dame a 7-0 lead two plays later on a 25-yard run.
An interception by Wiener late in the quarter gave the Knights the ball at the St. John Bosco 17, and they scored five plays later on a two-yard run by Trevin Lund.
“I guess I was just lucky,” Wiener said. “I was in the right place at the right time.”
Notre Dame stretched its lead to 24-0 by halftime, adding a 34-yard field goal by Christian Thomsen and a 27-yard touchdown pass from Seth Oseransky to Todd Fenton in the second quarter.
Fenton, who finished with five catches for 82 yards, established a school record for career receiving yardage with 1,247. He surpassed the previous mark of 1,177 set by Joey Orlando in 1994.
Fenton has 48 catches for 735 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.
“It’s nice, but I don’t think about school records,” he said. “It’s nice to have but winning is the most important thing.”
Chris Leon also had an impressive performance for Notre Dame with 103 yards rushing and a touchdown in 15 carries.
