Hueneme Enjoying View of Pacific

Unleashing more than a decade of frustration, Hueneme High routed Camarillo, 46-6, Friday night to claim the first Pacific View League title.

The championship is the first for the Vikings (5-4-1, 4-0 in league play) since they shared the Channel League title in 1987. The last time Hueneme won a league crown outright, in 1969, current Viking Coach Larry Miller was a standout halfback.

“We came out playing. We knew we hadn’t won a championship in a long time,” said Hueneme tailback Donald Thompson, who rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns in 18 carries. “I think we can win [a Southern Section title] too if we stay focused like we are.”

Hueneme, which trailed, 6-0, early before its offensive onslaught, has lost only its opener on the field. The Vikings forfeited three nonleague victories for using an ineligible player.

Camarillo (7-3, 3-1), which had a seven-game winning string snapped, was thoroughly overmatched and could gain only 74 yards to Hueneme’s 404. The Scorpions played without leading rusher Greg Rountree, who is recovering from minor injuries suffered in an automobile accident last week.

The hard-hitting, mistake-filled game featured eight fumbles, including a fumbled punt and kickoff by Hueneme in an 11-second span early in the first half.

Camarillo’s Matt Anger, filling in for injured Jason Geisler, kicked field goals of 32 and 39 yards after the miscues to give the Scorpions their brief lead.

From there it was all Hueneme, which built a 19-6 halftime lead. Quarterback Jeff Garcia completed 10 of 13 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Keary Colbert had six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns.

“All the work in the weight room, the running in the off-season, it’s all paying off,” Thompson said.

Phylong Ngov led Camarillo with 19 yards in 10 carries. Quarterback Garrett Valencia completed four of 15 passes for 31 yards.

Hueneme was penalized eight times for 89 yards.

Hueneme, which entered the game averaging 418 yards and 40 points per game, had seven scoring drives. Three were of more than 60 yards and two were more than 70.

The most impressive march chewed up seven minutes of the second quarter, covering 62 yards in 15 plays. Thompson scored on a five-yard run to give Hueneme a 13-6 lead. Thompson, who has 1,530 yards and 28 touchdowns, leads the region in scoring.
