Brown Tackles Big Game on and Off Field

Justin Brown doesn’t just hunt down defensive linemen.

The 6-foot-6, 290-pound tackle goes after deer, ducks and pheasant.

Brown, a senior at Chaminade High, began hunting at 10 years old. His father, Jim, taught him how to use a gun when he was 7.

Brown is as comfortable tracking deer as he is decleating defenders.

“It’s a lot of patience,” Brown said. “You can’t really tromp around the forest. You have to let them come to you. You have to sit and wait and be patient and quiet.”

When Brown can’t get away for weekend hunting trips, he goes to sanctioned trapshooting events, where the targets are clay pigeons.

He is also an avid fisherman. He fishes for brown trout near Mammoth Lakes or he goes on eight-day deep-sea fishing trips in the waters off Mexico.

His graduation gift from his parents will be a 16-day fishing trip.

Brown knows what to do with any extra filets. Coach Ed Croson of Chaminade always receives a bag from Brown after a successful trip.

Maybe Brown is angling for a little forgiveness if he gets called for holding.

“Something like that,” he said.
