Top-Ranked Sea Kings Stop Sailors in Tennis

Newport Harbor played its strongest doubles teams, but top-ranked Corona del Mar was still able to take four of nine sets and defeat the third-ranked Sailors, 10-8, in a Sea View League girls’ tennis match Thursday at Corona del Mar.

Newport Harbor’s Natalie Braverman handed Eva Baudenbacher her first loss of the season, 7-6. Braverman won her other sets, 6-4, 6-0, for the Sailors (5-3, 0-1). Corona del Mar is 5-1, 1-0.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 9, Costa Mesa 9 (Estancia wins on games, 79-72)--Hillary Hirtler helped lead Estancia (9-0, 1-0), winning, 6-1, 6-1, 2-6 at Costa Mesa. Phuong Tran led the Mustangs (1-5, 0-1), winning 6-2, 6-0, 6-2.

In the Sunset League:

Los Alamitos 13, No. 8 Esperanza 5--Shauna Brodsky swept in singles, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, and Emily Ackerman and Tara Siddiqui swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, for Los Alamitos (2-5, 1-0). Esperanza fell to 7-3, 0-1.

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 13, El Toro 5--Tatiana Steinberg didn’t lose a game in singles for host Santa Margarita (6-2). Erin Miller won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-4, and Laura Bonhall won, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0.

In Empire League boys’ cross-country:

Loara 25, Century 30--It was a close race as Jose Herrera of Loara and Century’s Cesar Medina traded the lead during the three-mile race. But Herrera was able to take the lead at the end and win the race in 15 minutes 50 seconds. Medina finished 20 seconds later for second.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 21, Brea Olinda 34--Valencia beat Brea for the first time in seven years. Brea’s Matt Rainwater took first in 17:19 followed by Valencia’s Rafael Valdez, who finished in 17:43. Valencia improved to 3-0, 1-0.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 23, Esperanza 33--Edison’s Andy Knutsen ran the 5,000-meter course at Fairview Park in 16:13 to beat his previous record there by 26 seconds. Knutsen tied another course record on Saturday when he finished in 15:22 at the La Mirada Regional. On Sept. 24 he broke an El Dorado Park course record after finishing in 15:30. Edison improved to 2-0.

In Century League girls’ cross-country:

Foothill 27, Villa Park 28--Freshmen Laura Strachan (19:54) and Emily Haigh (20:27) took the top two spots to help Foothill (1-1) win.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 22, Magnolia 23--Wendy Munua of Anaheim won the race in 21:38, but teammate Janet Michel’s third-place finish (22:07) was the key to the victory. Emma Contreras of Magnolia finished three seconds behind Munua.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran wins--The Lancers (3-0) won their 57th consecutive league meet as Laura Bocanegra won the race at Ralph Clark Park in 21:25 in a triangular meet. Orange Lutheran beat Whittier Christian, 23-37, and defeated Cerritos Whitney, 19-31. Whittier Christian beat Cerritos Whitney, 24-34. Loretta Apodaca took second in 21:33 for Whittier Christian (2-2).

In the Sunset League:

No. 9 Los Alamitos 25, Fountain Valley 34--Fountain Valley’s Julie Allen placed first in 18:26 at Central Park West. In Sea View League girls’ golf:

Woodbridge 134, Newport Harbor 143--Channing Lovejoy was the medalist for Woodbridge (8-1, 2-0), with a six-over 41 at Mesa Linda. Newport Harbor is 2-4, 0-2.

In nonleague golf:

Rosary 120, Orange 148, Loara 194--Romina Bollini shot a two-over-par 36 at Fullerton Golf Course to lead Rosary (5-1).

University 237, Edison 259--Angela Won shot a four-over 71, leading University (5-0) at David Baker and Rancho San Joaquin.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Mater Dei 3, Esperanza 2--Katie Beauregard had 21 kills and Linsay Pavlik added 20, as Mater Dei (2-2) rallied to win, 8-15, 9-15, 15-3, 15-10, 15-13. In the Villa Park boys’ water polo tournament:

No. 7 Villa Park 10, Bell Gardens 6--Nick Pacelli and Chris Greene each scored four goals in a second-round victory for Villa Park (8-5).

Capistrano Valley 10, No. 9 Marina 8--Capistrano Valley (5-3) scored twice in the fourth quarter to defeat Marina in the second-round game.

In nonleague boys’ water polo:

Long Beach Wilson 17, No. 6 Los Alamitos 5--Long Beach Wilson, ranked first in Southern Section Division I, was up 10-1 at halftime. Trevor Wawrzynski had two goals for Los Alamitos (4-4).
