City to Dedicate New Police Station
The city will celebrate its 29th birthday today by holding a dedication ceremony for its new $12.7-million police station, the largest in the county.
Visitors who arrive between 10 a.m. and noon will be given a tour of the building at 1301 Alamo St. Police are expected to move into the two-story structure in a month.
“The policeman are absolutely dying to get out of the old facility,” Councilman Bill Davis said. “You have to see the old facilities to see the conditions they were living under.”
The Northridge earthquake in 1994 created cracks in the current station on Cochran Street, and caused half the building to sink six inches. Also, police said the building had leaky roofs and did not contain enough space in the evidence room.
The new 55,000-square-foot building will offer more space, as well as a state-of-the-art dispatch center and modern holding cells.
“This new one is so big and spacious--all of the things that you would want are there,” Davis said.
