Lelles, O’Neill Pace Notre Dame

Seniors Kevin Lelles and Eugene O’Neill of Notre Dame High placed first and second to lead the Knights to an 18-43 victory over Harvard-Westlake in a Mission League cross-country meet at Griffith Park on Thursday.

Lelles, seventh in the 1997 state Division IV championships, clocked 14:38 over the 2.8-mile course that was a 10th of a mile short of the usual distance at Griffith Park.

O’Neill timed 14:59 to help Notre Dame take five of the top six places.

Senior Adam Rose was fourth in 15:21, junior Larry Pitkin was fifth in 15:22 and senior Johnny Madrid was sixth in 15:24 for Notre Dame (4-0, 4-0 in league meets), No. 3 in the state Division IV rankings.

In other boys’ cross-country meets:

Channel League meet No. 2--Junior Josh Spiker placed first and senior Matt Swaney finished third to help Ventura defeat second-place Buena, 31-41, at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura.

Spiker clocked 16:06 over the three-mile course, with Swaney timed in 16:47.

Freshman Sergio Cortez played a big role for Ventura (7-1, 7-1) with a ninth-place time of 17:35.

Foothill League meet No. 2--Seniors Jacob Boeding and Dan Klawer and sophomore Nick Zoetewey placed 1-2-3 to help Saugus to a 5-0 record in a meet at Griffith Park that was scored as a series of dual meets.

Boeding clocked 15:32 over the three-mile course, with Klawer timed in 15:33 and Zoetewey in 16:08 for Saugus, the No. 4-ranked Division I team in the state.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Simi Valley 26, Royal 29--The Pioneers had five of the top eight finishers to overcome a 1-2 finish for Royal by sophomore Jaclyn Pedersen and freshman Erin Wessner in a Marmonte League meet at Challenger Park in Simi Valley.

Pedersen, runner-up in the 1997 Ventura County championships, clocked 19:21 with Wessner timed in 19:47 for Royal (2-2, 2-2).

Simi Valley senior Amanda Anderson, who has been hampered by a sore back since winning the Channel Islands Invitational on Oct. 2, placed third in 20:42 for the Pioneers (4-0, 4-0).

Thousand Oaks 15, Moorpark 47--The Lancers (3-1, 3-1) had the first six finishers in a Marmonte League meet at Tierra Rejada Park in Moorpark, after winning the large schools’ race of the Clovis Invitational on Saturday.

Senior Amanda Armstrong finished first in 19:21 and senior Melissa McBain placed second in 19:22 over the three-mile course for Thousand Oaks, the No. 3-ranked Division I team in the state.

Foothill League meet No. 2--Senior Lauren Fleshman and freshman Jazmin Treadway placed first and second to help Canyon to a 5-0 record in a meet at Griffith Park that was scored as a series of dual meets.

Fleshman, runner-up in the West region championships last year, clocked 19:20 over the three-mile course to win her sixth race of the season without a loss.

Treadway timed 19:35 for Canyon (11-0, 10-0).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Hart 14, Canyon 4--The doubles team of Jenny Munroe and Catherine Pucci won 18 of 19 games and No. 1 singles player Cristina Cancio won 18 of 20 for the Indians (9-2, 6-0), who extended their Foothill League winning streak to 16 matches.

Harvard-Westlake 17, Notre Dame 1--Chelsea Heller won 18 of 19 games for the Wolverines in a Mission League match.

Calabasas 12, Marymount 6--The No. 2 doubles team of Kathy Habuki and Frayla Schoenfeld swept each of their three sets for the Coyotes (11-0) in a nonleague match in Calabasas.

Monroe 5, North Hollywood 2--No. 3 singles player Fiona Cudiamat and the No. 2 doubles team of Rosa Macaraeg and Crystal Ortiz each won their matches, 8-0, for the host Vikings (3-4, 3-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory.

Burbank 11, Burroughs 7--Georgette Wright improved to 17-1 in league play by sweeping her singles matches to lead Burbank in a Foothill League match at Burroughs.

Burbank’s No. 2 doubles team of Karla Garcia and Vana Zaghiyan swept their matches. The Bulldogs (10-2, 5-1) moved into second place in league and play first-place Hart on Tuesday.

Agoura 9, Royal 9--Allison Tyson improved to 27-3 by winning 18 of 19 games for Agoura, which prevailed on games won, 79-69. The visiting Chargers (7-5, 5-2) played without No. 1 singles player Brooke Borisoff (30-0), who was ill.
