SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Jason Winn threw three touchdown passes as Granada Hills High rolled to its sixth consecutive victory, dominating host San Fernando, 49-7, Friday night in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Winn, a junior who is emerging as one of the region’s top quarterbacks, completed 10 of 16 passes for 160 yards. He had touchdown passes of 29, 53 and 36 yards.

Granada Hills (6-0, 3-0 in league play), which went 1-9 last season, was equally effective with its running game.

Omari Mack complimented Winn, running for 166 yards and two touchdowns in seven carries. He provided early damage, racing up the middle for a 91-yard touchdown on his first carry.

Peter Gunny had touchdown catches of 53 and 36 yards for the Highlanders, finishing with four receptions for 103 yards.

Running back Major Caldwell of San Fernando (3-3, 0-3) rushed for 182 yards in 34 carries but it wasn’t enough for a team with injury problems.

The Tigers dropped their third in a row and have scored one touchdown in the past two games.

San Fernando had little trouble moving the ball early, dominating the time of possession. But quality time went to the Highlanders, who built a 28-7 halftime lead.

Granada Hills’ defense struck first with Gerald Jones returning an interception 60 yards for a touchdown, giving Granada Hills a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Mack followed his 91-yard score by setting up a two-yard touchdown run by Triston Frazier with a 22-yard run.

Caldwell was impressive in the first half but did not have much to show for his efforts. He did score on a one-yard run to pull the Tigers to within 21-7 with 3:57 left in the half.

But San Fernando botched an onside kick attempt. Granada Hills capitalized minutes later when Winn completed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Josh Brandon.
