Yankee pitcher Andy Pettitte, who gave up six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings of his last start, a 6-1 loss to Cleveland in Game 3 of the American League championship series, left the team Thursday for Houston, where his father underwent triple-bypass surgery the same day.

Manager Joe Torre has Pettitte penciled in to start Game 4 in San Diego, but he was not sure whether the left-hander would return to New York for Games 1 or 2.

“He’s under a lot of stress and strain right now,” Torre said. “I’m not sure when we’re going to see him, but since he’s not pitching the first two games, we’ll leave it to him. I know he’s throwing where he is and has someone to catch him, so we’ll just play it by ear.”

The Angels finally reached the World Series. Well, sort of. There are eight former Angels in this series, San Diego’s Wally Joyner, Mark Langston, Jim Leyritz, Greg Myers and George Arias, and New York’s Chili Davis, Chad Curtis and Luis Sojo.

“That sounds like a pretty good lineup right there,” Sojo said.
