3 Touchdowns by Edwards Lift University
Reggie Edwards rushed for 159 yards and scored three touchdowns leading University to a 24-8 victory over Costa Mesa in a Pacific Coast League game Thursday night at Irvine High.
Edwards carried the ball 23 times, scoring on rushes of 61 and seven yards. He also caught a 30-yard pass from quarterback Andy Dennis for a touchdown.
Zach Sherwood converted three extra points and kicked a 42-yard field goal for the Trojans.
University (3-3-1, 1-1) led, 24-0, before Costa Mesa’s Jimmy Herzog scored on a 61-yard run in the third quarter.
Herzog finished with 165 yards in 26 carries.
Ricky Martin picked off his county-leading 10th interception for Costa Mesa (4-3, 1-1), but the Mustangs turned the ball over seven times.
In another Pacific Coast League game:
Laguna Hills 39, Laguna Beach 0--Jeff Fischer scored three touchdowns and quarterback Brandon Champlin completed eight of 14 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns to lead the host Hawks (4-3, 2-0).
Fischer caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Champlin in the first quarter and a 62-yarder in the second quarter.
