Marina Can’t Handle Breska-to-Carter Combination

Defenses usually swarm Fountain Valley receiver Aaron Carter, so Baron quarterback Ryan Breska was pleased to see something different from Marina Friday night.

“They’ve been double-teaming him normally,” Breska said. “It was nice to have him not be double covered, and Aaron made some great plays.”

One of those--a 70-yard catch for a touchdown--came on the second play of the game and set the tone in Fountain Valley’s 31-14 Sunset League victory at Huntington Beach High.

Carter, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior, had his way in the Marina secondary, catching eight passes for 183 yards. It helped that Breska, a 6-4, 210-pound senior left-hander, was on target, completing 13 of 19 passes for 265 yards.

Breska scored two touchdowns on quarterback sneaks--the first after a 46-yard pass to Carter moved the ball to the one-yard line--to give the Barons (6-1, 2-0 in league) a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

Marina (4-3, 1-1) never recovered. The Vikings lost two fumbles in the first half and killed two second-half drives with penalties. Marina running back Ray Mietkiewicz was held to 70 yards--less than half his average--in 17 carries.

The game was delayed 20 minutes in the third quarter after Fountain Valley defensive back John Thompson injured his neck making a tackle. Thompson, a senior, never lost consciousness and had feeling in his arms and legs. He was taken by ambulance to Pacifica Hospital in Huntington Beach. The hospital wouldn’t release information about his condition.
