Top-Ranked Golden West Beats Riverside in Volleyball

Golden West, ranked first in the state, defeated Riverside in three games in Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball Wednesday in Riverside.

Laurel Kokaska had 13 kills and Meghan Coolbaugh had nine kills and four blocks to lead Golden West to the 15-4, 15-2, 15-3 victory.

Jennifer Ogilby had 11 kills and 10 digs for Riverside (7-4, 4-3). Golden West is 14-0, 7-0.

In another conference match:

Saddleback 3, Cypress 0--Gina Stivers had 18 kills and Kelly Webb 10 for the Gauchos (13-3, 6-1) in the 15-2, 15-13, 15-4 victory. Jessica Miles led the Chargers (5-6, 2-5) with 11 kills.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s water polo:

Orange Coast 11, Cypress 3--Carter Weir and Ryan Carroll each scored two goals for host Orange Coast (9-14-1, 3-4), which shut out Cypress (13-13-1, 2-5) in the second half.

Saddleback 15, Palomar 3--Dennis Connolly scored four goals and the Gauchos (19-6, 6-1) remained one game behind first-place Grossmont (7-0 in conference). Carlos Gonzalez had nine saves for visiting Saddleback.

In South Coast Conference water polo:

Fullerton 5, Mt. San Antonio 2--Brett Benson and Scott Baker each scored two goals to lead visiting Fullerton (13-8, 5-1).

Eric Rodriguez scored both goals for Mt. San Antonio (13-6-2, 3-3).

Golden West 18, Long Beach 3--Adriano Marsili scored four goals and Andre Pedroni three for the host Rustlers (25-1-1, 5-0).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s water polo:

Orange Coast 13, Cypress 10--Ariana Lindren scored five goals for Orange Coast (23-3, 7-0), ranked No. 2 in the state.

Palomar 8, Saddleback 3--April Florent had 13 saves for Saddleback (14-9-2, 3-4) in the loss to host Palomar (13-6, 5-2).

In South Coast Conference wrestling:

Palomar 25, Golden West 19--Jesse Standlea won by a technical fall, beating Palomar’s Gary Padilla, 21-11, in the 174-pound match. Teammate John Blanco (184) pinned Alan Clegg in 3 minutes 43 seconds. Golden West is 8-5, 3-2.
