Irvine Women Win Soccer Tournament

Simone Ferrara scored and assisted on a goal by Nicole Bucciarelli as Irvine defeated Oral Roberts, 2-0, Monday in the championship game of the FILA Classic at Cal State Fullerton.

Bucciarelli, named the tournament’s outstanding offensive player, broke a scoreless tie less than two minutes before the half. She took a looping pass from Ferrara and beat goalkeeper Amanda Loyall from 10 yards. The Anteaters, who outshot Oral Roberts, 21-3, are 3-0; Oral Roberts is 1-2.

In the third-place game:

Oregon State 4, Cal State Fullerton 1--Sunny Miller scored twice and Lindy Brown had a goal and an assist as the Beavers beat the Titans. Fullerton (1-2) outshot Oregon State, 18-5. Allison Hamada of Oregon State (1-1) was named the tournament’s outstanding defensive player.

In men’s soccer:

UC Irvine 5, Denver 2--The Pioneers scored first, but five Anteaters answered as Irvine easily improved to 3-0.

Senior captain Pat Lee scored his third goal in three games on a penalty kick in the 44th minute. Robert Melendez scored and had two assists.

Puget Sound 2, Concordia 0--The Eagles outshot the Loggers, 14-8, but remained winless in three games this season. Michael Rottersman had eight saves for Puget Sound (1-0).

UC San Diego 2, Southern California College 1--Joshua Davis’ overtime goal led UCSD past SCC.
