FOOTBALL

Kevin Howard, one of Westlake High’s top receiver-defensive backs last season, has returned to football after earlier telling coaches he would drop the sport to concentrate on baseball.

“He came out [last Saturday] and said he missed [football],” Coach Jim Benkert said.

Howard is considered among the region’s top baseball prospects. His athletic ability strengthens a team that is already deep at the receiver and secondary positions.

Cal State Northridge learned Tuesday that center Beau Cherry is out six to eight weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee suffered in the Matadors’ 26-13 loss at Boise State on Saturday.

The Matadors will learn later this week the extent of defensive tackle Erik Gardner’s knee injury suffered against the Broncos. Gardner sprained his right knee and is out at least three weeks.

Quarterback Justin Mobley and receiver Joe Manning, who led Antelope Valley to the Southern Section Division II semifinals last season, are planning to redshirt at New Mexico, a school spokeswoman said.

The two, who were All-Southern Section selections at Antelope Valley, sat out New Mexico’s 38-9 nonconference victory over Idaho State in the opener on Saturday.

BASEBALL

Former Pepperdine infielder Ryan Radmanovich and former Hart High pitcher Andrew Lorraine were promoted to the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.

Both had played at triple-A Tacoma, which completed its season Monday.

Former Taft High and Moorpark College outfielder Gabe Kapler finished the minor league season Monday with four Southern League records.

Kapler had a minor league-high 146 runs batted in, 81 extra-base hits, 319 total bases and 47 doubles for Jacksonville, the Detroit Tigers’ double-A affiliate.

Teammate Robert Fick, formerly of Newbury Park and Cal State Northridge, tied Kapler for the league doubles mark.

TRACK AND FIELD

Frances Santin of Cal State Northridge, the 1996 and 1998 City Section champion in the girls’ 300-meter low hurdles for Taft High, is academically ineligible and can’t compete for the Matadors during the 1999 season.

Santin, The Times’ 1998 Valley-Ventura County region girls’ track and field athlete of the year, signed with Northridge in April. She didn’t score high enough on the SAT to be eligible for competition at the NCAA Division I level.

Ika Eliashvili, the 1997 City champion in the girls’ triple jump for Birminghan, is attending Moorpark College and will compete for the Raiders in the spring.

Eliashvili, a native of Georgia in the former Soviet Union, set a school record of 37 feet 10 inches as a junior.

VOLLEYBALL

Northridge lost to Loyola, 16-14, 15-6, 15-13, in its last match on Sunday, but the Matadors won the five-team, round-robin tournament with a 3-1 record. Bowling Green finished 3-1, but Northridge swept the Falcons, 15-8, 15-7, 15-10.
