It Will Be Ready Golf at Pt. Mugu

Golfers from Ventura County will try to reenter the Guinness Book of World Records for playing the world’s fastest round of golf on Sept. 21 at Pt. Mugu Golf Club at the Naval Air Weapons Station.

Team Balls Out Diving, organized by Ventura resident Billy Toms, held the record from 1992-1996 when it played 18 holes in 9 minutes 39 seconds.

Fore Worcester’s Children’s team broke the record on Sept. 9, 1996, at Tatnuck Country Club in Worcester, Mass., by playing in 9 minutes 28 seconds.

“We wanted to bring the record back to Southern California ever since,” Toms said.

The team consists of approximately 50 players. One player sets up on every tee, one on every green and others positioned strategically along the fairways.

When the clock starts, the person on the first tee hits. The player in the first fairway goes to the ball and hits to the green, where the putter takes over. As soon as the putt falls, that player yells out to the player on the next tee.

Players keep score, but the score has no impact on the record. The Worcester group shot 70 when setting the record.

“It’s just a group of golfers, crazy golfers,” said Mike Wagner, who will participate. “Any excuse for a round of golf.”

The team consists of low-handicap amateurs and about 15 professionals. They are allowed a practice round and two attempts to break the record.

“It goes pretty fast,” Toms said. “My prediction is nine minutes.”

Tim Hogarth of Chatsworth shot four-under-par 68 Tuesday at California Country Club in Whittier to earn medalist honors in U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifying.

Keith Kinsel of Glendale qualified at 71.

The U.S. Mid Amateur is Oct. 3-8 at NCR Country Club in Dayton, Ohio.

Linda Pearson of Glendale and Jody Duclos of Moorpark shot six-over-par 80s on Tuesday at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista and qualified for the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

Karen Bramnon of Poway led the field of 12 qualifiers with a two-over-par 76. The U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur is Oct. 3-8 at The Champion’s Golf Club in Houston, Texas.

Anne Lee of Northridge overcame an opening-round 81 and tied for sixth Sunday at the American Junior Golf Assn. Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior Classic at Magnolia Grove Golf Course in Mobile, Ala.

Lee had a three-round total of 235, 20 strokes behind winner Virada Nirapathpongporn of Thailand. Nirapathpongporn won by nine strokes over second-place Samantha Fox of Whites Creek, Tenn.

Pepperdine’s women set a school record for the lowest team round by shooting 290 to win the Colorado State Ram Fall Classic this week at Ptarmigan Country Club in Ft. Collins Colo.

Lisa Chang, a sophomore for the Waves, won the individual tournament, her first college victory, with a 54-hole total of one-over-par 217.

David Garrity of Chatsworth shot one-under-par 69 to earn medalist honors in U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifying Thursday at Friendly Hills Country Club in Whittier.

Don Baker of Woodland Hills qualified at 70.
