Two celebrants were arrested Tuesday night at Mexican Independence Day festivities when they started throwing rocks and other objects at police officers, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said. Three officers were injured and were put on medical leave.

One of the officers had his foot broken. Another bruised his right knee and the third was hit in the head with a bottle, said LAPD spokesman Jason Lee. All three were treated at the scene.

One man was arrested on charges of inciting a riot and another for assaulting an officer with a bottle, considered a deadly weapon, Lt. James Litton said Wednesday.

“Rocks, bottles, sticks, fruit . . . oranges were tossed. Anything they could get a hold of,” said Lt. Jeff Hullet.

The incident happened at 10:35 p.m. Tuesday at the Olvera Street celebration. Hullet said a small number of celebrants, who had been drinking heavily, got unruly and caused officers to respond with a tactical alert.
