Vermilyer’s Late Score Lifts El Dorado, 22-19

NORTH COUNTY

Jason Vermilyer scored on a 15-yard run with two minutes left in the fourth quarter as El Dorado defeated La Habra, 22-19, Friday night at Valencia High.

La Habra (1-1) scored twice in the third quarter to take a 19-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Vermilyer’s first touchdown came in the first quarter on a two-yard run.

* Whittier Christian 45, L.A. Murphy 0: Matt Jones rushed for 179 yards in 17 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Heralds at Whittier College.

Jordan Bodell had a 25-yard touchdown run and Mike Lutfi followed with a six-yard scoring run to give the Heralds a 16-0 lead. Jones then scored on a 22-yard run to make it 22-0 and Bodell ran in from 28 yards to put Whittier Christian ahead, 29-0. Jones then scored on runs of 17 and six yards to complete the scoring.

CENTRAL COUNTY

Breska’s Long Passes Lead Fountain Valley

Ryan Breska passed for 178 yards and both touchdowns to lift host Fountain Valley (2-0) to a 13-7 victory over Corona Centennial at Westminster High.

Adam Ramirez scored in the second quarter with a 51-yard reception from Breska to go up 6-0. Breska threw another long pass, 55 yards to Aaron Carter, for the Barons’ second touchdown.

Corona Centennial (0-2) finally got on the board in the fourth quarter, but the Baron defense ultimately dominated the game, finishing with three fumble recoveries and five sacks.

* Santiago 45, Santa Ana 30: Santiago running back James Thomas scored five touchdowns, two in the fourth quarter, and gained 356 rushing yards for the Cavaliers (2-0).

Tony Jones scored three touchdowns for Santa Ana.

* Pacifica 75, Orange 13: Pacifica scored 47 first-half points in the victory at El Modena.

Brett Stern rushed for 107 yards in seven carries and scored three touchdowns for the Mariners (1-1). Jeff Weber caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Brent Kirkland, returned a kickoff 97 yards for another score and also kicked a 42-yard field goal for Pacifica.

The Mariners, who forced seven turnovers, also scored a defensive touchdown on Brian Mendoza’s 35-yard interception return in the second quarter. Weber then returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown to give Pacifica a 54-0 lead.

* Ocean View 8, Garden Grove 2: Ocean View scored with four minutes remaining to equal its victory total from last year and give first-year Coach Harold Heggers his first victory since coming over from Cerritos.

Jason Rhoads scored Ocean View’s touchdown on a 29-yard run. Tauris Smith caught a pass from Scott McMahan for a two-point conversion.

On defense for Ocean View, Deshai Houston intercepted a pass inside the one-yard line late in the game and Tauris Smith blocked a field goal.

* Brethren Christian 14, Long Beach St. Anthony 13: Leon Green’s 46-yard touchdown run with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter lifted Brethren Christian (2-0).

Nathan Farris scored in the first quarter for Brethren Christian on a 20-yard pass from Kyle Painter, who completed four of 16 passes for 52 yards.

Jeff Lippen then scored two touchdowns, both on 40-yard pass reception, in the second and third quarters to give St. Anthony a 13-7 lead. Lippen had five catches for 145 yards. St. Anthony is 0-2.

SOUTH COUNTY

Coburn Leads Westminster Past Estancia, 30-14

Kelly Coburn threw three touchdown passes and kicked a field goal to lead Westminster to a 30-14 nonleague victory over Estancia at Newport Harbor High.

Coburn gave Westminster (2-0) a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 22-yard field goal. He extended the lead to 10-0, connecting with Tommy Roberts on a 13-yard pass in the second quarter.

After Manu Tanielu scored on a 33-yard run in the third quarter for Estancia (0-2), Coburn followed with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Junior Tau that lifted Westminster to a 16-7 lead.

Coburn connected with Roberts again in the fourth quarter on a 22-yard pass and Daniel Sanchez completed the scoring for Westminster with a 17-yard touchdown run.

Coburn finished the game completing 13 of 18 passes for 185 yards and one interception.

Estanica’s final score came on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Kenny Valbuena to Brett Valbuena.

Corona del Mar 23, Costa Mesa 6: Nate Lemmerman rushed for 172 yards in 23 carries to lead the Sea Kings (1-1) to their first victory at Orange Coast College.

Jimmy Herzog scored the lone touchdown for Costa Mesa on a two-yard run and led the Mustangs (1-1) in rushing with 86 yards and 25 carries.

Seth Richardson tied the score at 4 minutes 41 seconds in the first quarter with a 44-yard reception from Michael Bergey, and Hunter MacDonald increased the lead to 13-6 with a 49-yard reception from Bergey at 1:08.

Curt Sumner scored the final touchdown, on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Capistrano Valley Christian 17, Palos Verdes Chadwick 7: Dustin Smith rushed for 202 yards in 29 carries, leading host Capistrano Valley Christian at Laguna Beach High.

It was the second week Smith rushed for more than 200 yards.

Smith opened the scoring on a three-yard run in the second quarter. Ryan Allen increased the lead to 12-0 by making a catch on Jamie Tellier’s 75-yard pass.

Chadwick (1-1) then scored on a three-yard run, but Capistrano Valley Christian scored a field goal to leave it at 17-7.

Allen made a key interception late in the fourth quarter to seal the game.

OUT OF COUNTY

Carasa’s Late 25-Yard Run Helps Century Top Norwalk

Ramiro Carasa’s 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter sealed a 14-6 victory for Century over Norwalk at Norwalk Excelsior Stadium.

It was the first victory at the school for Coach Marty Albert.

Carasa rushed for 76 yards in 17 carries, and Gus Gonzalez gained 77 yards in nine carries, including a 40-yard touchdown run that gave the Centurions a 7-0 lead. Glenn cut the lead to one on a 35-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Carlsbad Army-Navy 23, St. Margaret’s 13: Alfonso Abundes and Joe White scored second-half touchdowns for Army-Navy Academy.

St. Margaret’s (0-2) opened the game in Carlsbad with a touchdown by quarterback Rhett Swanson, who scored on a 10-yard run. Swanson completed nine of 21 passes for 62 yards.

Army-Navy (2-0) took an 8-7 lead after White scored on an eight-yard run and added two on the conversion. White rushed for 100 yards in 30 carries.

Liberty Christian 26, Yucca Valley Joshua Springs 24: Senior quarterback C.J. Leeman scored on a two-yard run with 53 seconds remaining to give Liberty Christian the victory in an eight-man game at the Yucca Valley Community Center. Senior free safety Jason Gardner then intercepted a pass with 13 seconds left.
