Women’s Soccer

The Irvine women’s soccer team needed an extra effort from Nicole Bucciarelli to remain undefeated.

She scored both goals in a 2-2 tie with Loyola Marymount Friday. She also had a goal against Pepperdine, giving her seven for the season.

THIS WEEK

Cross-country: For the second consecutive week, Christy Villa had a strong third-place finish, as she had a time of 17 minutes 28 seconds in the 5,000-meter Aztec Invitational in San Diego. Irvine finished fifth out of 12 teams. The men’s and women’s teams compete against UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Westmont at the Lagoon course Saturday in Santa Barbara.

Men’s soccer: Goalkeeper Kevin Mehrens had his first shutout, as the Anteaters beat Redlands, 2-0, last week. The Anteaters host Cal State Northridge Friday and Concordia Saturday. Both games are at 7 p.m.

Women’s soccer: Goalkeeper Kirsten Roy is seventh in the nation with a 0.25 goals-against average. She has three shutouts. Irvine opens Big West Conference play with games Friday at Utah State and Sunday at North Texas.

Women’s volleyball: Larissa Carter broke her school record for hitting percentage (.733) in a victory over Dartmouth. Irvine opens Big West Conference play at home Friday against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. Both matches are at 7 p.m.
