Pacifica Rally Beats Bell Gardens

Willis Manley scored on a one-yard run with six minutes remaining to give Pacifica a 22-17 victory over Bell Gardens in a nonleague game Thursday at Bolsa Grande High.

The Mariners (2-1) fell behind, 17-7, after Bell Gardens’ Moises Caro returned a fumble 33 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

After Jeff Weber kicked a 38-yard field goal to cut the lead to 17-10, Pacifica quarterback Matt Reis connected on a 34-yard touchdown pass to Jason Simpson later in the third quarter. However, the Mariners continued to trail, 17-16, after Weber missed to the right on the point-after attempt.

Simpson had nine receptions in the game, which tied a school record, and totaled 104 yards.

Costa Mesa 42, Long Beach St. Anthony’s 22--Costa Mesa (2-1) dominated St. Anthony’s on the ground as tailback Jimmy Herzog rushed for 157 yards in 20 carries and quarterback Dave Weir scrambled for 169 in 12 at Newport Harbor High.

After briefly trailing, 8-7, in the first quarter, Costa Mesa scored 29 unanswered points.

Upland 24, Marina 17--Marina trailed 17-0 in the third quarter when Viking quarterback Scott Austin ran 26 yards for a touchdown, cutting the lead to 17-7. After Upland fumbled on its next possession, a Sean Sanchez field goal made it, 17-10.

Things began to unravel for Marina (1-2) on the ensuing kickoff as Upland sophomore Cazmir Hill broke several tackles for an 87-yard touchdown return and a 24-10 lead.

After a 70-yard drive, Marina tailback Ray Mietkiewicz--155 yards in 23 carries--fumbled on the Upland 10-yard line with 7:37 remaining in the game.

Southern California Christian 20, Palos Verdes Chadwick JV 8--SCC scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to come from behind.

SCC trailed by two points entering the final quarter, but took a 12-8 lead when quarterback Drew St. Clair faked a pitch to running back Brian Cochrane and then threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to David Farrar.

The Flames (1-2) added to their lead with a seven-minute drive capped by Cochrane’s five-yard touchdown run. Cochrane rushed for 123 yards.

SCC took an early 6-0 lead on a 35-yard touchdown pass from St. Clair to Mike Beejach.

Cypress 30, Buena Park 8--Cypress built a 16-0 halftime lead in the nonleague victory at Cypress.

Buena Park (0-3) averted a shutout when Earl Parker threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to William Flamenco in the fourth quarter.

Katella 26, Orange 12--Sophomore reserve quarterback Chris Haller entered the game in the second quarter and sparked Katella with a 57-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Nita for a 17-0 lead.

Hiller, who also ran in the two-point conversion, completed three of five passes for 74 yards.

Juan Martinez connected on field goals of 35 and 29 yards for Katella (2-1). Victor Espinoza gave Katella a 10-0 lead, after returning an interception 35 yards for a touchdown. Rich Mango capped Katella’s scoring with a six-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Orange (0-3) scored all its points in the fourth quarter.

Sonora 17, Anaheim 0--The Raiders extended Anaheim’s losing streak to 14 with the shutout at Western High.

Sonora (2-1) took a 14-0 lead after in the opening quarter. Jerron Cannon scored on a six-yard touchdown run and Josh Gonzalez later ran in from four yards. Nick Ross also kicked a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter for the Raiders.

William Iverson had 105 yard rushing in 11 carries for Sonora.
