Several Area Basketball Players Chosen All-State

Damaris Hinojosa of Moorpark High and Jaline Bradley of Channel Islands were selected to the all-state girls’ basketball team and Rafael Berumen of Simi Valley was chosen to the boys’ team by Cal-Hi Sports.

Santa Clara’s Nick Jones, the state Division V player of the year, was a third-team all-state selection.

In addition, Cal-Hi Sports picked all-state teams by division and class.

Gilbert Arenas of Grant was honored in boys’ Division I, Scott Borchart of Chaminade and Devin Montgomery of Alemany in Division III, and B.J. Ward of Santa Clara in Division V.

Girls honored in Division III included Kate Beckler of Alemany, Omelogo Udeze of Harvard-Westlake and Christen Roper of Nordhoff.

Courtney LaVere of Buena was selected state freshman of the year, and teammate Kelly Greathouse was chosen to the all-sophomore team.

Sinnamonn Garrett of Crescenta Valley was selected to the girls’ all-junior team, and Branduinn Fullove of Simi Valley and Russell Lakey of Harvard-Westlake were chosen to the boys’ all-junior squad.

BASEBALL

* Rain forced the postponement of a nonconference baseball game between Cal State Northridge and USC on Thursday night at USC.

Northridge (20-20) and USC (17-16) will play a doubleheader today beginning at 2 p.m.. The teams were scheduled to play Friday night at 7 and conclude the three-game series Saturday at Northridge.

Left-hander Barry Zito (5-2) is scheduled to start the first game for USC against right-hander Trevor Gray (4-0). The second game will match USC left-hander Steve Smyth (4-6) against right-hander Mike Frick (2-0).

CROSS-COUNTRY

* Eddie Lopez, men’s coach at Glendale College for the last 12 years, has been selected women’s coach.

Lopez, who guided the Glendale men to state titles in 1995 and ‘98, will replace Melissa Seale, women’s coach for the last three seasons.

“The idea behind the change is to combine the men’s and women’s cross-country programs under one coach,” Athletic Director Jim Sartoris said. “We feel this reorganization of the cross-country program will greatly enhance the women’s team.”

Glendale won the 1998 Western State Conference women’s title and placed 10th in the state championships.

SOCCER

* Auditions for the American Youth Soccer Organization’s College Athlete Program (CAP) will be May 1 in Granada Hills. Participants will receive a written evaluation of their skills, and parents are invited to a free seminar on the college application process, athletic scholarships, financial aid sources and athletic eligibility. RUNNING

* The Santa Clarita Runners 16th annual women’s 5K run and noncompetitive walk will start at 8 a.m. Saturday in Newhall Memorial Park. The race is dedicated to the memory of Erica Hersh, who died last year of cancer. Proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society, Santa Clarita unit. Information: (661) 294-0821.
