Norrington Is Hired to Coach at Reseda

Malcolm Norrington, who last season coached the freshmen boys’ basketball team at Crespi High, has been hired as coach at Reseda.

Norrington, 30, graduated from Cal State Northridge after attending Gardena and Verbum Dei highs.

He replaces David Enowitz, who resigned.

* Shayne Berry, a sophomore point guard at Taft, has transferred to Chatsworth.

Berry averaged 10.4 points last season.

Chatsworth next season returns an all-league guard in Ronald Ruffin, who averaged 13 points.

* Guard Arthur Lee of Stanford, from North Hollywood High, has been selected to a team of seniors who will play the Harlem Globetrotters in Oakland on April 25, in Detroit on May 1 and in Cincinnati on May 2.

Lee averaged 13.1 points last season and led the Pacific 10 Conference in free-throw shooting at 88.6%.

TENNIS

* Freshman Stephen Amritraj of Crespi High and Sam Warburg of Sacramento advanced to the semifinals in the boys’ 16 doubles in the Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships at the Grenelefe Golf and Tennis Resort in Grenelefe, Fla.

Amritraj and Warburg, seeded No. 2, defeated No. 5-seeded K.C. Corkery and Shaun Kraft, 6-4, 6-1.

They will play Derrick Bauer of Marina del Rey and Drew Hoskins of Los Alamitos today.

Tiffany Brymer, from Rio Mesa High, and Abigail Spears of Valley Center, Calif., advanced to the semifinals in the girls’ 18 doubles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lauren Barnikow and Tanner Cochran.

Brymer and Spears, seeded No. 2, will play unseeded Lauren Fisher and Jessica Johnson today.

In singles play, Kelly McCain of Largo, Fla., defeated Maureen Diaz of Glendale, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, in the girls’ 18 division round of 16.

Brymer defeated Henriette Williams of Raleigh, N.C., 6-3, 6-3, in a consolation match.

Erica Sauer of Somis defeated Natalie Arcario of Longwood, Fla., 6-1, 6-3, in a girls’ 14 consolation match.

Nick Weiss of Calabasas High and Phillip Sheng of Thousand Oaks High won boys’ 18 consolation matches.

Weiss beat Carl McCafferty of Highland, Calif., 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), and Sheng defeated Timothy Kofol of Bronxville, N.Y., 7-6 (7-1), 1-6, 6-4.

In the boys’ 16 back-draw, Robert Yim of Glendale won when Val Banada of Miami retired because of an injury and to Brent D’Amico of Aurora, Colo., defeated Lester Cook IV of Woodland Hills, 6-1, 6-0.

VOLLEYBALL

* Bob Samuelson, an assistant at Cal State Northridge, has left the team to take a job with a computer company.

Samuelson, a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team that won the bronze medal in Barcelona, was in his second season at Northridge.

He played at Northridge in 1988-89.

FOOTBALL

* Darrell Stepter, an All-City lineman from Van Nuys, has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
