A 23-year-old man drove himself to a hospital Wednesday night after being shot in his car in a south Oxnard neighborhood, police said Thursday.

Jesse Cardenas of Oxnard was in serious but stable condition Thursday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, said Oxnard police community services officer Roger Brooks. He was treated for a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

Cardenas was shot shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday in a housing tract near Morris Street and Saritas Drive, officers said.

It was unclear whether he was parked or was driving at the time of the shooting, Oxnard Police Det. Dennis McMaster said.

The gunman fired at least four rounds at the vehicle and one bullet shattered the driver’s window and struck Cardenas, the detective said. Several shell casings were found at the scene.

After the shooting, patrol officers spotted Cardenas speeding toward the hospital and followed him there, Brooks said.

The motive for the shooting was still being investigated, but it is not related to gang activity, McMaster said.
