Granada Hills Taken to Limit
Chris Martin provided crucial defensive help in the final game and Granada Hills High outlasted Chatsworth on Friday, 13-15, 18-16, 16-14, 13-15, 16-14, in a Northwest Valley Conference volleyball match at Granada Hills.
Martin, who finished with 23 blocks, had five in the final game. Mike Aleman had 32 kills for the Highlanders (7-1, 4-1 in the conference play).
Granada Hills blew an 8-0 lead in the first game but rallied from a 14-11 deficit to win the third.
David Lurth had 22 kills and Shekabe Nazari added 22 with 10 blocks for Chatsworth (4-3, 3-2).
SOFTBALL
Notre Dame 1-4, Paraclete 0-3--Karen Tobin scored the winning run on a passed ball in the seventh inning of the second game to give the Knights a sweep in a nonleague doubleheader at Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park.
Tobin led off the seventh with a double and moved to third on a single by Cheryl Acosta. Tobin finished with three hits and Patricia Wetzel had three hits and two runs batted in for Notre Dame (6-3).
In the first game, Amanda De La Cerda (5-3) of Notre Dame pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts. She did not walk a batter.
Canoga Park 8, Poly 2--Jenny Pitillo pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts and had two hits for the Hunters (6-4, 1-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Poly.
Pitillo (6-4) walked two.
Sonia Torres (0-4) of Poly struck out six but allowed eight hits and six walks.
Reseda 7, Van Nuys 2--Stephanie Yeatts had two hits, including a two-run double that highlighted a four-run third inning for the Regents (3-5, 2-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Reseda.
Yeatts (3-5) pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks.
Marisa Mochizuki had two hits and an RBI for VanNuys (1-11, 0-3).
Burbank 12, Bell Gardens 2--Amanda Defusco had a two-run triple and a home run for the Bulldogs (8-5) in a nonleague victory at McCambridge Park that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Leslie Alfaro (5-2) pitched a two-hitter with two strikeouts and two walks for Burbank.
Ventura 1, Oxnard 0--Jaci Martinez led off the game with a homer and Crystal Gravelin pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Cougars in a Channel League game at Ventura.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Monroe 5, Van Nuys 2--Robbie Parras beat Sammy Choo at No. 1 singles and the Vikings (4-3, 4-1) notched their first victory over Van Nuys (3-4, 3-1) in seven years in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Monroe.
