Several vehicles collided on the Ronald Reagan Freeway on Monday night, critically injuring two people, authorities said.

The accident took place at 8:22 p.m. on the eastbound 118 Freeway just west of the San Diego Freeway junction, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Two people--a man and a woman in their 30s--were taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills where they were treated for multiple traumatic injuries, Humphrey said.

“The vehicle in which the two were riding had severe rear-end damage, though the exact circumstances of the accident are under investigation,” Humphrey said. “Three vehicles were strewn across the lanes of the eastbound 118 Freeway making it difficult to piece together the accident.”

Three other people escaped with minor injuries. They declined treatment.

Eastbound lanes of the 118 Freeway were closed for about an hour, authorities said. The roadway was reopened at about 9:30 p.m.
