THIRD PERIOD

Highlight Reel: The puck is mesmerizing to two Red Wings, who chase it and forget to chase Kariya behind the Detroit goal. The puck eludes the Wings, but not Kariya, who skates out with it briefly, then slides it to Teemu Selanne, who sends it through Osgood’s legs to cut the lead to 4-3 at 13:03. Kariya to Selanne to the net. Looks like a combination the Detroit defense ought to consider worrying about.

What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Selanne goes 43 minutes before he gets his first shot, and that’s not going to win the Mighty Ducks many games. By the end of the evening, he has a goal and an assist, but the Red Wing defense has bottled him up for much of the game and Kariya isn’t going to win this series by himself.

Winning Number: Remember Yzerman? His face looks like four-week-old hamburger by the time Askey does his Patrick Roy imitation, venturing all the way into the face-off circle to try to cut Yzerman off. Roy does it better. This is too easy, and Yzerman has a three-goal game, his fourth in playoff hockey. And Joe Louis Arena maintenance folks get more television face-time picking up all those hats.

Wrong Number: Multiple choice: (1) The Ducks drop to 1-11-3 in the Joe, and there is another game there Friday. (2) Duck Coach Craig Hartsburg was in the third grade when Scotty Bowman coached his first playoff game with the St. Louis Blues. And (3) remember that 18-8 shot advantage in the first period? Shots on goal: Red Wings 37, Ducks 29.
