Home Run Mark Runs in Long Beach Family

Kevin and Chris Miller of Long Beach Wilson are brothers who have a lot in common, most recently the same distinction in the Cal-Hi Sports state record book.

Each brother hit two home runs in one inning last Friday in a 21-0, five-inning Moore League victory over Compton. They are the first brothers among the 32 players who have accomplished the feat in California, a list that includes Ted Williams, who played at San Diego Hoover in 1936.

The Millers drove in 11 runs during a 13-run first inning. Kevin had a grand slam and three-run shot, Chris a pair of two-run homers.

The Millers are the second set of teammates to homer twice in the same inning. John Hefler and Julio Vargas of Santa Ana did it in 1987.

Wilson was supposed to suffer a bit this season from the loss of third baseman Sean Burroughs, who was selected by the San Diego Padres in the first round of last year’s amateur draft.

But the Bruins began the week with a 15-3 overall record and 7-0 mark in the Moore League.

The Bruins have a key game today against Lakewood and will Millikan twice next week.

Senior Doug Choi of Glendale High won the 400 meters and ran on the victorious 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams to help the Dynamiters upset Pasadena Muir, 70-57, in a Pacific League boys’ track and field meet Tuesday at Glendale.

It was the first dual-meet loss for Muir since 1979, when the Mustangs were defeated by cross-town rival Pasadena.

“I told the kids before the meet that we could beat them,” Coach Brian Lowe of Glendale said. “I just thought we matched up well against them.”

Choi won the 400 in 50.4, finished second in the 200 in 22.3, and ran on teams that won the 400 relay in 43.8 and the 1,600 relay in 3:33.6 for Glendale.

Earlier this season, the Muir girls’ team was defeated by Crescenta Valley, the team’s first dual-meet loss since 1983.
