Granada Hills Wins Tennis Playoff With Doubles Domination

Granada Hills High won eight of nine doubles sets en route to defeating Carson, 22-7 1/2, in a first-round match of the City Championship boys’ tennis playoffs Wednesday at the Burbank Tennis Center.

Brian Mintz and Brad Steinberg, Granada Hills’ No. 2 doubles team, won their sets, 7-5, 6-0 and 6-0.

The No. 3 tandem of Khris Palyan and Dustin Sorotski won, 6-3, 6-0 and 6-0.

The Highlanders (13-1) will play El Camino Real in a semifinal on Monday. The teams split two meetings in Northwest Valley Conference play this season. Granada Hills lost to the Conquistadores in the City 4-A semifinals last year.

In other boys’ tennis matches:

El Camino Real 28, Eagle Rock 1 1/2--James Magsino lost only one game for the Conquistadores in a City Championship victory at the Warner Center Racket Club in Woodland Hills.

Matt Jones lost two games in four sets for No. 2-seeded El Camino Real (12-2).

Palisades 23 1/2, Grant 6--The No. 1 doubles team of David Behboudi and Lev Reys won two of three matches for Grant in a City Championship loss at top-seeded Palisades.

Chatsworth 23, Birmingham 6 1/2--Davey Asao swept his matches at No. 1 singles for the top-seeded Chancellors in a City Division victory at Chatsworth.

Monroe 15, Taft 14 1/2--Charlie Fragozo and Author Ternersensian defeated Hoang Trung and Hung Chung, 7-5, in the final doubles set to lift the Vikings (8-4) in a City Division match at Taft.

Farshid Hajamirzaee, the No. 1 singles player for Taft (5-9), swept his matches.

Westlake 10, Simi Valley 8--No. 1 player Alex Yaftali won three sets to spark the Warriors (11-1, 8-1) to a Marmonte League victory at North Ranch Country Club.

Simi Valley (7-7, 4-5 in league play) got a doubles sweep by the No. 1 team of J.P. Agustin and Jeremy Quinlan. Tyler Jensen, Brendon Love and Scott Garzuzi each won two of three singles sets for the Pioneers.

Thousand Oaks 16, Newbury Park 2--No. 1 player Andrew Lieu and No. 2 Serge Mitrofanov each swept three singles matches for the Lancers (13-2, 8-1) in a Marmonte League victory at Thousand Oaks.

Agoura 15, Royal 3--Dustin Erb (21-0) lost only one game at No. 2 singles for the Chargers (10-3, 7-2) in a Marmonte League victory at Rancho Simi Community Park.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Newbury Park, 15-2, 16-14, 15-9--Cam Dickson had 13 kills and Bryan Reinstein added 11 for the visiting Highlanders (14-0, 10-0), who clinched a share of their 11th consecutive Marmonte League championship.

Highland d. Lancaster, 15-5, 16-14, 9-15, 13-15, 15-8--Rick Haight had 20 kills for Highland (11-0, 7-0) in a Golden League match at Lancaster (9-4, 3-4).

Jon Moser had 13 kills and a school-record 27 digs for Highland, which rallied from a 13-0 deficit in the second game.

Mike Kennedy had five of his 19 kills in the second game for Highland. Noel Cruz contributed to the comeback by serving for seven consecutive points.

Quartz Hill def. Palmdale, 15-4, 15-7, 15-5--Ryan Corpening had 11 kills for the Rebels (13-1, 6-1) in a Golden League victory at Quartz Hill.

Chatsworth def. Granada Hills, 15-9, 18-16, 15-7--David Lurth had 20 kills and six blocks, and Shekabe Nazari had 15 kills and seven blocks for the Chancellors (8-4, 7-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Chatsworth.

Mike Aleman had 17 kills for Granada Hills (10-3, 7-3).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Cal State Northridge 13, San Diego 7--Jeremy Sickles’ two-run double capped a four-run fifth inning that gave Northridge a 10-6 lead in a nonconference game at San Diego.

Sickles added a run-scoring double in the seventh.

Northridge (24-26) tied the score, 6-6, when Daryl Grant hit a grand slam in the fourth. Daniel Phillips hit his 15th home run of the season in the third for the Matadors.

Northridge reliever Mike Frick pitched 3 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and one earned run. He struck out five.

Westmont 14, The Master’s 9--Kurt Fillmore had three hits and drove in two runs for Master’s (32-9-1) in a nonconference game at Westmont.

Ty Sager and Aaron Penberthy each had two hits and one RBI for Master’s.

Matt Ainley had two hits, including a home run, and five RBIs, and Ryan Eisele hit a grand slam for Westmont (21-25).

Eisele set Westmont records by finishing the season with a .433 batting average and 81 hits.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD

Malibu 66, Nordhoff 61--Christen Roper won the shotput and discus for Nordhoff in a Frontier League girls’ meet at Malibu.

Malibu (4-0) won its first league title. Nordhoff won the championship last year.

Nordhoff 92, Malibu 31--Jon Hall won three events to help the Rangers successfully defend their Frontier League boys’ title with a victory at Malibu.

Hall won the 100 meters in 11.0, the 200 in 22.9 and ran a leg on the winning 400 relay team.
