IRVINE
After more than two years of design work and months of scrutiny by various city commissions, the Irvine Co.’s controversial hillside development known as Planning Area 27 will finally face judgment by the City Council on Aug. 24.
Residents packed the council chambers last Thursday in anticipation of the Planning Commission’s ruling on the 2,500-home project proposed for the hills south of Turtle Rock. Commissioners approved a modified version of the plan after hearing arguments from more than a dozen residents, rendering their verdict just after midnight.
The modified plan, which will now be forwarded to the City Council for a final vote, calls for additional landscaping, especially along Bonita Canyon Road and Bommer Canyon, to shield the new development from view. It also limits the height and grading of slopes.
