An attorney representing three residents on Thursday said he may sue the mayor and three members of the City Council for allegedly violating California’s open meetings laws.

The residents contend city officials violated the law during an April 19 closed council meeting.

The city has 30 days to respond to the complaint, filed July 7, and to correct the alleged violations before a lawsuit could be filed.

Attorney James V. Lacy said city officials had not taken any action before the deadline, other than to say they would discuss the issue at the council’s next meeting Aug. 16.

Lacy said he hopes to discuss the matter with city attorneys. If the matter is not resolved, he said, he will file a lawsuit alleging eight counts of misdemeanor violations of the open meetings laws.
