A grass fire erupted in Lake Forest on Thursday afternoon, engulfing eight acres of Glass Canyon in Whiting Ranch near a construction site, fire officials said.

More than 100 firefighters were called to a patch of undeveloped land near Portola Parkway and Rocky Road at 2:40 p.m. The fire was extinguished in 2 1/2 hours.

Two water-dropping helicopters were also called to the scene, Orange County Fire Authority spokeswoman Tasha Schilling said.

No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened, officials said.

Investigators apprehended two 10-year-old boys and released them to their parents. They had been lighting matches in the area, Schilling said.

Officials will file charges against the boys to recover costs for fighting the fire.
