Carvin Wins 15th National Swimming Title

Chad Carvin of Laguna Hills earned his 15th national title by winning the 1,500-meter freestyle on the final day of the National Swimming Championships Tuesday in Minneapolis.

Carvin, who won a national title in the 800 freestyle on Friday and another in the 400 freestyle Monday, was timed in 15 minutes 22.85 seconds.

After a year away from competition, Amy Van Dyken resumed her medal-filled career by winning the 50 freestyle. Gary Hall Jr., diagnosed with diabetes in March, won the men’s 50. Irvine’s Jason Lezak, who won a title in the 100 freestyle Saturday, finished fifth in the 50 in 22.78.

Kaitlin Sandeno of Lake Forest finished second in the 1,500 freestyle (16:21.33). Sandeno, who won her second national title in the 400 individual medley Sunday, finished behind Brooke Bennett of Plant City, Fla. (16:14.77).

SOCCER

The Zodiac, in fourth place in the A-League’s Pacific Division of the Western Conference, hosts El Paso at 7:30 tonight at Santa Ana Stadium in a battle between of Galaxy affiliates.

Fifth-place El Paso (9-14) trails the Zodiac (12-9) by 12 points in the standings. The Patriots have lost seven of their last nine games. The Zodiac has lost two of its last three games since taking a 3-2 shootout victory over the Patriots on July 22.

The teams are coming off 2-1 losses to front-running San Diego. Kenny Hesse scored the lone goal for the Zodiac against the Flash in last Friday’s loss.

BASKETBALL

Paul Wachenheim has been hired as the boys’ basketball coach at Aliso Niguel, Athletic Director Mike Middlebrook announced. He replaces Ken Goldstone, who resigned in July.

Wachenheim coached at Moreno Valley Canyon Springs from 1994-97 and was voted 1996 Ivy League Coach of the Year.

Goldstone, who will teach at San Clemente this fall, started the Wolverine program when the school opened six years ago. He had a 66-65 record.

Aliso Niguel, which previously played in the Pacific Coast League, will be one of five schools in the Sea View League in the fall.
