A couple facing involuntary manslaughter charges in connection with their son’s death left town before police could arrest them.

Tania Johnson, 22, and her husband, Jennings Johnson, 24, left their apartment Tuesday afternoon after Tania’s mother read a newspaper account saying the couple were wanted by police, officers said.

An arrest warrant was issued Friday, but the paperwork was not complete until Wednesday morning, preventing officers from arresting them sooner.

“We went to the apartment to serve the warrant and they were gone,” said Manteca Police Det. Tony Souza.

Police say Tania Johnson left their 18-month-old twins and 3-year-old sibling unattended in the bathtub while she went to pick up a pizza July 6. Her husband was asleep in another room. When she returned, one twin was face-down in the water. He died two days later.

The couple’s children are in protective custody. Souza said the couple may be driving a black, 1992 Geo Storm with California license plate 3BJC096.
