Southern Utah’s season-opening football game against Western Montana, scheduled for today, has been canceled because of an NCAA ruling. According to rule 17.10.3, Division I and II schools cannot play against outside competition before the Thursday preceding Labor Day. Southern Utah is a Division I-AA institution, and Western Montana is in the NAIA. . . . Kansas State will meet Iowa in the Eddie Robinson Classic next summer in Kansas City, Mo., only the second college football game at Arrowhead Stadium, home of the NFL’s Chiefs.

Auburn receiver Clifton Robinson, who pleaded guilty earlier this month to a reduced charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, has been suspended from the Sept. 4 season opener against Appalachian State. Robinson was originally suspended from the team last spring, when he was charged with second-degree rape after allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old girl. . . . Colorado quarterback Taylor Barton has been suspended for the season opener against Colorado State. Coach Gary Barnett said he suspended Barton for “a violation of undisclosed team rules.” . . . Eric Jaworsky, who served as backup for the past two seasons, has won the starting quarterback’s job at New Mexico.
