A fire broke out early Saturday morning at a downtown rug shop, causing more than $800,000 in damage to the building and inventory, fire officials said.

The blaze started about 2:30 a.m. near the front door of Nima Rug Gallery at 440 E. Main St., according to the Ventura Fire Department.

It was doused in about 15 minutes, but not before causing $25,000 in structural damage to the rug shop and smoke damage to a neighboring candy store, fire officials said.

The owner of the rug shop told authorities his inventory of hand-woven rugs, valued at $800,000, was completely ruined.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The rug shop is two doors away from the former Joannafina’s Mexican Cafe on Main Street, which was destroyed in a grease fire in November.
