Boyd’s 14 Kills Help Golden West Sweep

Grace Boyd had 14 kills to lead Golden West to a three-game sweep of Butte in the first round of the community college women’s volleyball state tournament Friday at Pasadena College.

Natalie Snowden added 10 kills as the Rustlers won, 15-7, 15-1, 15-6, to improve to 24-0.

Golden West, which has won six consecutive state titles, advances to face Cuesta in the second round at noon today.

The winner plays again tonight at 7, and the title game is 5 p.m. Sunday.

Cuesta beat Shasta, 15-11, 15-4, 15-10, also Friday.

In another first-round match:

San Joaquin Delta 3, Irvine Valley 1--Irvine Valley’s Lyndsi Johnson had 14 kills, but Delta won, 15-9, 8-15, 15-7, 15-4. The Lasers play Butte in an elimination match at 9 today.

Irvine Valley had reached the tournament by upsetting second-seeded Ventura in the Southern California playoffs.

In the Orange Coast men’s basketball tournament:

Orange Coast 82, Imperial Valley 81 (OT)--David Castleton (26 points) made a free throw with nine seconds left in overtime for the victory.

The Pirates (4-2) advance to the title game at 7 tonight against Los Angeles Valley, which defeated Long Beach, 83-64, in the other semifinal.

Dave Elliott added 23 for OCC.

In a consolation game:

Cypress 89, Golden West 52--Freshman Donald DeFoe had 15 points and 14 rebounds and teammate Armelious Parker scored 11 points for the Chargers (6-3).

JaQuinn Hill scored nine points for Golden West (4-4).

In the Cuesta women’s tournament:

Orange Coast 97, Taft 60--Erin Tomlinson scored 18 points and Karyn Fierst and Leah Wilde added 14 points each to lead Orange Coast (8-1), which advanced to the championship game.

In the Sequoias tournament:

Sacramento 75, Fullerton 66--Valerie Matweeff scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds for host Fullerton (6-2).
